Almost There, Almost Me by María Nightingale
Almost There, Almost Me is a personal journey read. The author and the character, Maria, seems to spin in circles juggling personal challenges such as depression, traveling to different countries, hobbies such as paragliding, and trying to kindle a love affair while balancing her feelings. Nothing seems as it is for Maria.
But what I love most about the book is not just Maria trying to find her way through life's pleasure by coping with depression, traveling, hobbies, and love, the book is written beautifully expressing strong metaphors as a figure of speech comparing her related and unrelated emotions throughout life seeking personal validation. Her comparison doesn't mean the comparison is literally true; instead, she uses the qualities of familiar challenges and rewards of concepts to help readers visualize, feel, and understand her emotions and her abstract ideas. The author uses metaphors to build deeper meaning of what she is going through, craft vivid imagination, and emphasize central themes revolving around her.
The end of the story will leave some readers with different perspectives. Some readers may find the ending as a final confirmation of what Maria planned to for the rest of her journey. Other readers may feel a sense of incompletion, without explanation like they’ve falling off a cliff and drifting toward to no destination... just drifting to what lies ahead. New life challenges, perhaps?
For me I feel I went off the cliff with Maria.
But I'm sure her journey will find peace.
